Partial Colectomy

Removing the diseased parts of your colon is achievable with a procedure called a partial colectomy. The surgeon will also need to remove parts of the healthy tissue to ensure that unhealthy cells are not left behind. To maintain the natural passing of waste, the surgeon may opt for a further procedure that involves joining the ends at the affected area.

In other cases, it is necessary to join the colon to what is known as a stoma. This is an opening in the abdominal wall. The purpose of the procedure is to divert waste to a bag that is connected to the stoma. Ideally, the stoma should act as a short term solution, but you may need the bag in place permanently.
