Removing the diseased parts of your colon is achievable with a procedure called a partial colectomy. To maintain the natural passing of waste, the surgeon may opt for a further procedure that involves joining the ends at the affected area.

In other cases, it is necessary to join the colon to what is known as a stoma. This is an opening in the abdominal wall. The purpose of the procedure is to divert waste to a bag that is connected to the stoma. Ideally, the stoma should act as a short term solution, but you may need the bag in place permanently.
